Container records

Carrier container data. Direct means the box was never transshipped — it stayed on the vessel it first loaded onto. Via a port means it was transshipped there and carried on aboard a different vessel. This tier is here to establish one fact: that containers really do move Vung Tau → Los Angeles. The two medians are not comparable directly: 1 carriers record containers on this lane against 16 operators seen by AIS, so the two sets cover different ships. Where they can be compared — one carrier at a time — the difference is port time, measured at 4.14 d at Vung Tau (1,435 records) and 3.52 d at Los Angeles (7,295 records).

Of the 1,368 journeys whose routing is recorded, 1,281 moved without transshipment and 87 were transshipped — Yantian (53, median 32.5 d); Vung TAU (34, median 25.4 d) .

The ships do not sail this lane in a straight line. The most called intermediate port is Yantian, on 76% of voyages (735 of 971), and the median voyage makes 2 intermediate calls (the most recorded is 7). A container the carrier records as direct still rides a ship that stops along the way — direct means no transshipment, not nonstop.

Voyage time is not stable. By year the median ran from 24.1 d in 2025 to 28.9 d in 2022, a spread of 4.8 d across 5 years.

It is not uniform across carriers either. Over the whole period the quickest well-evidenced service is OCEAN - PSW3 & AWE3 | CMA - CJX/MOCANA +3 at 20.2 d (CMA CGM, n=10) and the slowest of the ranked set is TP6 at 25.7 d (Maersk, n=171) — a difference of 5.5 d on the same lane.

Two grains, stated plainly.
