Container records

Carrier container data. Direct means the box was never transshipped — it stayed on the vessel it first loaded onto. Via a port means it was transshipped there and carried on aboard a different vessel. This tier is here to establish one fact: that containers really do move Shanghai → Oakland. Picking operators above scopes the table where the carrier appears in both feeds.

AIS ship movements give 1,378 port-to-port voyages by 337 vessels, median 25.4 days (mean 26.6 d, middle half 22.4–28.5 d).

The two medians are not comparable directly: 2 carriers record containers on this lane against 18 operators seen by AIS, so the two sets cover different ships. Where they can be compared — one carrier at a time — the difference is port time, measured at 3.53 d at Shanghai (12,464 records) and 4.0 d at Oakland (1,593 records).

Of the 339 journeys whose routing is recorded, 326 moved without transshipment and 13 were transshipped — Shanghai (13, median 24.1 d) .

The ships do not sail this lane in a straight line. The most called intermediate port is Los Angeles, on 69% of voyages (949 of 1,378), and the median voyage makes 2 intermediate calls (the most recorded is 7). A container the carrier records as direct still rides a ship that stops along the way — direct means no transshipment, not nonstop.

Voyage time is not stable. By year the median ran from 25.1 d in 2024 to 26.2 d in 2022, a spread of 1.1 d across 5 years.

It is not uniform across carriers either. Over the whole period the quickest well-evidenced service is MATSON - CCX at 13.0 d (Matson, n=19) and the slowest of the ranked set is MS2 at 27.2 d (Ocean Network Express, n=13) — a difference of 14.2 d on the same lane.

Two grains, stated plainly. Use the workbook to reproduce the cards; use the CSV for the raw journey log.
