Container records

Carrier container data. Direct means the box was never transshipped — it stayed on the vessel it first loaded onto. Via a port means it was transshipped there and carried on aboard a different vessel. This tier is here to establish one fact: that containers really do move Shanghai → Lazaro Cardenas. The two medians are not comparable directly: 3 carriers record containers on this lane against 23 operators seen by AIS, so the two sets cover different ships. Where they can be compared — one carrier at a time — the difference is port time, measured at 3.53 d at Shanghai (12,464 records) and 4.61 d at Lazaro Cardenas (5,322 records).

Of the 535 journeys whose routing is recorded, 468 moved without transshipment and 67 were transshipped — Tianjin > Busan (21, median 126.0 d); Busan (17, median 30.0 d); Manzanillo (9, median 79.3 d); Tianjin (8, median 28.0 d) .

The ships do not sail this lane in a straight line. The most called intermediate port is Busan, on 66% of voyages (1,161 of 1,753), and the median voyage makes 3 intermediate calls (the most recorded is 7). A container the carrier records as direct still rides a ship that stops along the way — direct means no transshipment, not nonstop.

Voyage time is not stable. By year the median ran from 25.4 d in 2022 to 28.3 d in 2024, a spread of 2.9 d across 5 years.

It is not uniform across carriers either. Over the whole period the quickest well-evidenced service is ZIM - ZXB at 17.7 d (Zim Integrated Shipping Services, n=37) and the slowest of the ranked set is Asia Central South America 1 at 26.0 d (CMA CGM, n=110) — a difference of 8.3 d on the same lane.

Nothing here is scheduled, modelled or estimated. Every figure is a count of observed movements, and every figure carries that count.
