Container records

Carrier container data. Direct means the box was never transshipped — it stayed on the vessel it first loaded onto. Via a port means it was transshipped there and carried on aboard a different vessel. This tier is here to establish one fact: that containers really do move Shanghai → Gdansk. Picking operators above scopes the table where the carrier appears in both feeds.

Carrier container tracking records 5 routings on this lane (11 carrier/service combinations, 4 operators); sailing direct, a container typically takes 51.04 days gate to gate over 131 recorded voyages — the same figures the route finder shows for this pair. AIS ship movements give 426 port-to-port voyages by 93 vessels, median 50.6 days (mean 50.8 d, middle half 46.6–53.6 d).

The two medians are not comparable directly: 3 carriers record containers on this lane against 7 operators seen by AIS, so the two sets cover different ships. Where they can be compared — one carrier at a time — the difference is port time, measured at 3.53 d at Shanghai (12,464 records) and 5.0 d at Gdansk (12,231 records).

Of the 1,675 journeys whose routing is recorded, 664 moved without transshipment and 1,011 were transshipped — Wilhelmshaven (499, median 53.4 d); Singapore (213, median 60.0 d); Tanger MED (106, median 46.4 d); Le Havre (66, median 67.0 d) .

The ships do not sail this lane in a straight line. The most called intermediate port is Yantian, on 88% of voyages (373 of 426), and the median voyage makes 5 intermediate calls (the most recorded is 7). A container the carrier records as direct still rides a ship that stops along the way — direct means no transshipment, not nonstop.

Voyage time is not stable. By year the median ran from 45.0 d in 2022 to 52.3 d in 2024, a spread of 7.3 d across 5 years.

It is not uniform across carriers either. Over the whole period the quickest well-evidenced service is AEU1 at 44.2 d (Cosco Shipping Lines, n=44) and the slowest of the ranked set is 2M - NEUR loop 2 | HSUD - NERA6 +2 at 53.4 d (Maersk, n=33) — a difference of 9.2 d on the same lane.

Two grains, stated plainly. Use the workbook to reproduce the cards; use the CSV for the raw journey log.
