Container records

Carrier container data. Direct means the box was never transshipped — it stayed on the vessel it first loaded onto. Via a port means it was transshipped there and carried on aboard a different vessel. This tier is here to establish one fact: that containers really do move Ningbo → Tema. Picking operators above scopes the table where the carrier appears in both feeds.

Ningbo → Tema is measured twice here, from two independent records. Carrier container tracking records 8 routings on this lane (54 carrier/service combinations, 13 operators); sailing direct, a container typically takes 40.51 days gate to gate over 246 recorded voyages — the same figures the route finder shows for this pair. AIS ship movements give 929 port-to-port voyages by 338 vessels, median 37.2 days (mean 38.4 d, middle half 33.9–41.9 d).

The two medians are not comparable directly: 3 carriers record containers on this lane against 19 operators seen by AIS, so the two sets cover different ships. Where they can be compared — one carrier at a time — the difference is port time, measured at 5.0 d at Ningbo (67,748 records) and 10.0 d at Tema (14,920 records).

Of the 1,177 journeys whose routing is recorded, 1,062 moved without transshipment and 115 were transshipped — Lome > Cotonou (31, median 87.4 d); Lome (29, median 53.0 d); Tanjung Pelepas (21, median 49.7 d); Pointe Noire (21, median 68.9 d) .

The ships do not sail this lane in a straight line. The most called intermediate port is Singapore, on 75% of voyages (693 of 929), and the median voyage makes 3 intermediate calls (the most recorded is 7). A container the carrier records as direct still rides a ship that stops along the way — direct means no transshipment, not nonstop.

Voyage time is not stable. By year the median ran from 35.1 d in 2022 to 44.1 d in 2026, a spread of 9.0 d across 5 years.

It is not uniform across carriers either. Over the whole period the quickest well-evidenced service is PIL - SWS at 33.1 d (Pacific International Lines, n=146) and the slowest of the ranked set is MSC - AFL at 41.0 d (Mediterranean Shipping Company, n=159) — a difference of 7.9 d on the same lane.

Two grains, stated plainly. Use the workbook to reproduce the cards; use the CSV for the raw journey log.
