Container records

Carrier container data. Direct means the box was never transshipped — it stayed on the vessel it first loaded onto. Via a port means it was transshipped there and carried on aboard a different vessel. This tier is here to establish one fact: that containers really do move Ningbo → Rotterdam. Picking operators above scopes the table where the carrier appears in both feeds.

Carrier container tracking records 15 routings on this lane (50 carrier/service combinations, 9 operators); sailing direct, a container typically takes 55.59 days gate to gate over 238 recorded voyages — the same figures the route finder shows for this pair. AIS ship movements give 1,124 port-to-port voyages by 395 vessels, median 49.8 days (mean 49.4 d, middle half 39.2–57.7 d).

The two medians are not comparable directly: 3 carriers record containers on this lane against 31 operators seen by AIS, so the two sets cover different ships. Where they can be compared — one carrier at a time — the difference is port time, measured at 5.0 d at Ningbo (67,748 records) and 3.0 d at Rotterdam (19,473 records).

Of the 1,438 journeys whose routing is recorded, 723 moved without transshipment and 715 were transshipped — Tanjung Pelepas (633, median 41.3 d); Singapore (34, median 59.0 d); Rotterdam (17, median 40.9 d); Antwerp (9, median 43.2 d) .

The ships do not sail this lane in a straight line. The most called intermediate port is Yantian, on 60% of voyages (673 of 1,124), and the median voyage makes 4 intermediate calls (the most recorded is 7). A container the carrier records as direct still rides a ship that stops along the way — direct means no transshipment, not nonstop.

Voyage time is not stable. By year the median ran from 39.9 d in 2023 to 56.5 d in 2025, a spread of 16.6 d across 5 years.

It is not uniform across carriers either. Over the whole period the quickest well-evidenced service is TWSL - PAX at 35.1 d (Tailwind Shipping Lines, n=31) and the slowest of the ranked set is FE3 at 52.6 d (Hapag-Lloyd, n=37) — a difference of 17.5 d on the same lane.

Two grains, stated plainly.
